If there is lots of small triangles, BigRedCroc slows things
down. Imagine, tiny triangle, to draw this it takes lots of FLTOIFIX() and one VL_Triangle()
defines/functions. Data transferred and calculated can be more than drawn into screen.
Better FLTOFIX and selfmade(well, manual covers it)VL_Triangle() function can double game speed.

And more, if you use BorlandC, try compiling using GCC or VC5 as it speeds up too.
